Curation, Consultancy, Criticism, Courses: Japanese avant-garde and East Asian contemporary art
Daria Solignac is an independent curator, art consultant, and writer specializing in Japanese avant-garde and East Asian contemporary art. Based in Paris and working internationally, she advises institutions, private collectors, galleries, auction houses, and brands on the evaluation, acquisition, curation, and contextualization of artworks, with a focus on historically grounded and intellectually rigorous approaches to collecting.
Her professional trajectory combines academic research and market expertise. She has worked as a scholar of East Asian art and Japanese avant-garde at Columbia University in New York, the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures in the United Kingdom, and Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto. She works with individuals, institutions, brands, and creatives engaging with Japanese traditions — not as static heritage, but as a living, evolving dialogue.
Since 2018, Daria Solignac has accompanied galleries, artists, and art-market actors in developing story-driven narratives and historical contextualization that strengthen both cultural legibility and commercial outcomes. Her practice is centered on interpretation as a strategic tool: clarifying artistic intent, situating works within art-historical and aesthetic frameworks, and translating complex practices for collectors and institutions without simplification or exoticism.
Daria Solignac works directly with artists in Japan, traveling regularly to conduct studio visits and research. Her work with Japanese avant-garde artists has been supported by prestigious grants from the Ishibashi Foundation and the Japan Foundation. Her primary areas of focus include Japanese avant-garde movements—often underrepresented or misinterpreted in Western contexts—women artists, and material-based practices that emphasize craftsmanship while engaging contemporary concerns and East Asian aesthetic philosophy.
Her curatorial and advisory interests span post-war and contemporary figures associated with movements such as Gutai, including artists such as Kazuo Shiraga, while placing particular emphasis on Kyoto-based avant-garde practices that remain comparatively obscured. With a focus on enduring value she helps shape collections and narratives that resonate beyond trends or borders.
